All in all I might be considered ‘thrifty.’ I will buy used cars, used tools, day-old bread, and hold on to old t-shirts like they were buried treasure. Clearance racks are a second home while shopping and occasionally I will preserve leftovers until they turn into a full palette of colors; mostly in the green spectrum.
But our short vacation this year was different. We spent more money than I care to admit on a rental home near Michigan City. But you should have seen the place: the house was wonderful! There were rooms and beds for every family member and updated showers that felt like miniature water parks inside. The hot tub accommodated our entire clan and the landscaping (including a descending water garden) made us feel like we were in paradise. And the family laughter and fun we had . . . made me realize it was all worth it. Want to see the pictures?
Today’s scripture passage from John 12 tells of a woman who poured out her very expensive perfume on Jesus’ feet. The whole house reeked of that powerful fragrance. Judas complained about the cost. Martha was annoyed that nobody even noticed the fragrance of her pot roast over which she toiled for hours – without help, I might add. I’m sure others had their opinions, too.
But to Mary and to Jesus, what she did was well worth it. She’d given her best to the One who deserved it the most. No regrets, no second thoughts, no guilt. Precious people are worth it; don’t you think?
